The Blog of Lee Coleé

After 30 some odd years working in opera, dance, stage, film, music theatre, and cabarets all across the US, she’s ready to pack all of that creative prowess into a tiny padded cave with just her and a mic for her next adventure in the world of voiceover.

Don’t panic! I’m not talking about a tattoo or the mark on a cow. But I am discussing the preparation for my “brand” in the industry, I need to figure out what market I should go for, right? At this point I’ve figured out that puberty really did pass me by and I had to put my thumb out to catch that ride. I also realized that I am a late blooming misfit, too short for the chorus line and too talented to ignore. In other words, my present situation is: LIMBO!

A marketing genius should enjoy this challenge in packaging this VO! I’m hoping one of the best can do it because I’m about to take a leap of faith with my finances as well as a left turn career wise. I confess I’m excited.

Being older makes me aware I don’t want to take the long road of making mistakes and detour unknowingly into wasted time and energy going down rabbit holes. Paying your dues needs to be done but with efficiency. My plan is to dig into intense coaching, marketing and practice with the best talent in the industry and in two years see where I stand. And working with the best, I should also be a pretty good instructor of VO as well as voice and acting. But that’s the backup plan.

In this journey of self analysis I’ve found that animation is the most fun. Childrens’ books are also on my radar. I can relate really well with teens so I’m looking into commercial work geared to teen and young adult products. E Learning might be fun too. My coaches tell me my voice is definitely unique and fun and very suited for these choices. When working on corporate reads I can’t seem to keep the whimsy out of my delivery which takes that sound of authority needed out of the picture. I don’t want to read medical and legal terminology anyway! So anything comedic I look forward to jumping on.

When making this decision to jump into the deep end of the pool and swim with the big kids, the “cool” talent and prepare to compete with them, I’ve had to have serious thoughts about :
1. I have no one else to be responsible for so why not do this?
2. It’s now or never if I want to be a well paid and recognized performer.
3. I’ve always been more afraid of success (don’t laugh! Its real!) than failure. Can I handle it when it comes?
4. I have to figure out how not to be impatient, anxious or over controlling.
Wanting to force an outcome is not always wise.

Yeah, lots to think about but I think my ducks are beginning to line up smartly. Let’s bring the website up and go to work! If anyone wants the contact info for my coaches and management or website designer, just contact me and I’ll be glad to give it to you. Can’t speak highly enough about my team! I love them!
