How many auditions do you save? How many scripts? How many instruction videos? I’m drowning in digital stuff! I’ve become an online hoarder and I hate computers! And I hate that they are necessary! The fear of accidentally deleting something important is immense. My anxiety issues are always easily activated , my ITunes library is a mess., My emails are stacked up to the hilt even after I’ve read them. My address book is packed! Many with disconnected numbers (Is that a message there somewhere?) And don’t even say “Desk Top.” I need a computer maid!
Well, I broke down and hired an intern to deal with it! She’s a big help but when she’s not here, I can’t find anything. Google is supposed to be the answer to my prayers but a file is sitting right there blinking at me but it won’t open! God, please help me step up to this challenge.
My address book has files within files. If you contact me and don’t want to disappear into the depths of computer land, be sure to tell me to have a hard copy of your contact info in my drawer.
That’s why I have a system when I’m talking to current and prospective clients. A manila file, color coded as to type of gig will have hard copies of contracts, contact info, a log of notes and dates of the history or start of a new relationship goes into it. Its like my backup work journal. I’m not worried yet about needing multiple file cabinets like I used to see in my veterinarian’s front office…
Tax stuff goes straight to the accountant. There’s a huge file envelope for hard copies of invoices, cancelled checks (yes, I still write a few) and medical stuff. Why is a VO even supposed to go near these issues?
Its my emails that really drive me crazy. Its like playing whack a mole. As soon as I delete a dozen posts, 24 more show up. And of course its mostly junk mail or news items all saying the same thing about the world coming to an end. I do love the gossip ones though. Yes, I have a spam or junk mail spot but I don’t even try to go there now. It’s like a walk in closet where the door barely stays shut. When a legitimate business email comes in, the poor thing almost gets ignored. I panic if I’ve missed anything from my agent, a client, student, etc. because its buried amongst the political ads.
My newest venture to deal with all this is texting. I never knew a message literally writes itself! Have you seen how it knows which word you’re thinking and it magically shows up.? Now I know why I see all these thumbs on other people just flying on their phones. Dang it, another email just came in!
